"Behind
the Design Scenes" was a public forum and a unique opportunity
to get a behind-the-scenes look at the design process and culture at
IKEA. This event featured a presentation on the roles of Sweden and
IKEA in the democratization of design; a live video teleconference with
top designers Lars Engman and Knut Hagberg; and a tour led by "interpreters," who highlighted
the principles that influenced selected IKEA furniture and product designs.
This
was an inspiring event for those interested in all aspects of design,
by two organizations dedicated to promoting the awareness and appreciation
of design as a way to enhance and enrich everyday life. The response from attending students was especially important in understanding how events like this affect the community:
"I look forward to taking advantage of more events like these where we have the opportunity to learn from those in the design field who are successful in their fields of design and who may be able to offer advice on steps to take to be successful in our own careers as designers."

"The Design Innovation Institute is the only institute of its kind in San Diego that is focussed on integrating design. I think it is very important to have this kind of institute in our community to educate people about design and how it can help [the needs of our] society."
